Pastoral Message in Support of the Share Lent Collection 2012

Lent is the period when catechumens traditionally prepare for the sacraments at Easter. It is also the season when the entire community of faith, and we individually, are renewed for our ongoing journey in conversion and faith. Jesus began his ministry by proclaiming “Repent and believe in the good news” (Mark 1.15). Lent renews us on the way of conversion and faith through prayer, fasting, and works of mercy. In his Lenten message this year, the Holy Father notes how we are also assisted on this journey by concern for one another and mutual encouragement.

Benedict XVI Creates 22 New Cardinals

On Saturday, the Church received 22 new cardinals. During the ordinary public consistory, the Pope invested each of the new cardinals with a ring and with the scarlet biretta.. "May Christ's total gift of self on the Cross," the Pope said, be for you the foundation, stimulus and strength of a faith operative in charity." He continued "May your mission in the Church and in the world, always be 'in Christ' alone, responding to His logic and not that of the world, and may it be illumined by faith and animated by charity which comes to us from the glorious Cross of the Lord."

Message of His Holiness Benedict XVI for Lent 2012

The Lenten season offers us once again an opportunity to reflect upon the very heart of Christian life: charity. This is a favourable time to renew our journey of faith, both as individuals and as a community, with the help of the word of God and the sacraments. This journey is one marked by prayer and sharing, silence and fasting, in anticipation of the joy of Easter.

Archbishop’s Pastoral Letter for Lent 2012

May I invite you to join me in an inner journey of faith and memory this Lent?  We begin soon on Ash Wednesday—February 22—and complete our spiritual renewal forty days later on Easter Sunday, April 8.
The Second Vatican Council’s decree on the renewal of the Sacred Liturgy pointed out two features of Lent. We are to recall our baptism—or prepare for it—and we are to do penance. By these ways, “the Church prepares the faithful for the celebration of Easter, while they hear God’s Word more frequently and devote more time to prayer.”
